Edo-jô was founded in 1457 to the plans of Ôta Dôkan at the site of the present day imperial palace. In 1590, Edo castle came under the control of the Shogunate established by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Tokugawa redesigned the city with Edo castle strategically located in the center. From then on, Edo City served as the administrative center of the nation for a period spanning nearly 300 years. Now almost nothing remains of the Edo castle. It became the residence of the emperor from the year 1868.
