Kamakura period (1192-1333)
鎌倉時代 kamakura-jidai

The year 1192 marked the beginning of the Kamakura shogunate - established by Minamoto no Yoritomo - Japan`s first full-fledged military government (bakufu). For nearly seven centuries to the Meiji Restauration of 1867, true political power in Japan was consigned to the warrior class (samurai), with the shôgun (generalissimo) at the top. In the late 13th century Japan was attacked twice by Mongol armies, and although although the invaders were repelled both times, this marked the beginning of the decline of the government in Kamakura.
