Kendô as practiced today is not a military training any more, but a refined sport, with contestants fencing with bamboo swords (shinai), striking, thrusting, parrying, defending and counterattacking. The origins of kendô are lost in time, but the sport surely goes back to the days when men hunted with metal sword (= samurai). In 1950 a new competitive sport based on kendô but using a new version of the bamboo sword was developed. Because of the renewed interest the "All-Japan Kendô Federation" was formed.
