Tenryû-ji - "temple of the
heavenly dragon" - located in Arashiyama /
Kyôto, belongs to the Rinzai Zen Buddhism. It was established
in 1339 by the shôgun Ashikaga Takauji
in memory of the emporer Go-Daigo (1288-1339). Because of
suffering fires (eight times) most of the present buildings date only
to the Meiji period. However, the Sôgenichi garden behind
the main hall (hôjô)
retaining
the same form as when it was designed by Musô Soseki in the
14th century. In 1994 Tenryû-ji
was designated by the UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site.
