Sugamo
is an area in the ward of Toshima and is well known for Jizô-dôri, a popular
shopping street for the older
generation. It lies at the crossing point of the JR Yamanote line (JR =
Japan Railways), and National Route 17. Sugamo is also
famous for the Sugamo prison, built in 1920 for political prisoners and
after 1945 commissioned by the US army to house war criminals. The
prison was demolished in 1971.
