Roads in Japan are developed and maintained well throughout the country, from large cities to mountain areas. Although most expressways are toll roads. Railroads also cover the whole nation, except some mountain areas. Train services are operated by JR (Japan Railways), local municipal entities and private companies. There are about 80 airports in Japan, but often located far from city centers. As Japan is an island country, marine transportation has flourished and harbor towns have prospered.
