Japan`s
second largest city (3,5 Millionen people) is the center for shipping,
trade and foreign contact since the mid-19th century. Formely a little
fishing village on the Tôkaidô
it was made a treaty port and is today one of the world`s largest
ports. 1923 the Great Kantô earthquake destroyed over 90 percent
of the city and killed 40,000 people - later world war II bombing
destroyed
half of the city.
